It is done

Last night, I finally made myself go through the Kindle publishing program, which took longer than I thought it would. There were all sorts of legal notifications I had to read, among other things. And it paid to stop dawdling, because as of this morning, I am a published author. It feels even better than I thought it would.

Of course, if I had waited a bit longer, I would have noticed that I had omitted the information about the length of my book in the description section. So, today, I had to correct the matter, after which I had to re-publish my book. Now it’ll take another twelve hours, before it’s updated.

But it’s all part of the learning process. Next time I’ll be that much smarter. And so, onwards to the next book.

Of the art of procrastination

I made a solemn decision yesterday, that today I would finally upload my manuscript to Amazon’s publishing programme. I would have the perfect day for it too, it was Sunday, my husband would be away the whole day, and it was raining. All I would have to do is sit by the computer and have it done. Right?

Wrong.

You see, I’ve made procrastination into something of an art form. Even the tasks I’m kind of looking forward to doing, I can postpone for days. So, today, I woke up late, spent hours reading morning papers and watching morning shows – hey, it was Dogtown and I had to see how it would turn out for those poor creatures, but admittedly, I could have skipped the reruns of Friends – until I was even remotely ready to consider opening my computer. And did I?

No. You see, it was also the perfect day for all the other stuff I’d been postponing. Like moving a drawer from one room to another, and we all know that never goes as fast as you hope. Then there were all those winter clothes I had to put away for the summer; after all, it’s June already. And then there were the laundry and the grocery shopping and… and before I finally opened the computer, it was evening already. And since then, I’ve changed the colour scheme of my web pages and written this blog, both very important tasks. If I push it a little more, I might well manage to postpone the uploading till tomorrow, and who knows what important tasks await me there.

My very first post

Welcome to Writer's Block blog. I believed myself witty when I came up with the title, but I think it more tells about my unwillingness to use a simple web search to find out how many other witty bloggers there are out there who have come up with the same idea. If I knew about them I would have to call mine something else. Please, don't disillusion me. Or do. That would actually be interesting.

However, writing this first post reminds me why we might suffer from a writer’s block in the first place, as I realised that it’s surprisingly difficult to come up with something genuinely interesting to write. Hopefully, I'll get better at it as I go. In the meanwhile, you wouldn’t believe how many drafts I made of this post…

The reason I started this blog is because I recently decided to take the plunge and start publishing the various desk drawer manuscripts I’ve written over the years. I’ll be self-publishing them with Amazon's Self-publish with us programme and my first book should come out any day now. It’s exciting and terrifying at the same time, because I’ll be personally responsible for everything from writing to publishing and marketing. With this blog, I’ll try and share the experience with you.
